A new article is claiming that construction workers in England have discovered the skull of Scottish rebel William Wallace. This story is not true.
The Article is Supposed to be Satire
This false item of seemingly historical news has been announced by World News Daily Report. The site is one of many current sites which publish fake news stories with disclaimers that admit the “satirical” and fictitious nature of their writings. Still, these news columns often have some quality of realness, and viewers sometimes pass them along while failing to see the disclaimer.
The article details the supposed discovery of the skull of William Wallace, the Scottish rebel who resisted an English assault on Scotland during the First War for Scottish Independence in the late 1200s. Allegedly the skull was discovered by English construction workers and preliminary DNA testing indicated the skull may belong to Wallace.
William Wallace: Truth and Fantasy
Brought into the modern popular imagination by Mel Gibson’s “Braveheart” movie, William Wallace is a legitimate historical figure. World News Daily Report does seem to accurately portray his death, as he was captured and executed in London in 1305… his decapitated head being tarred, spiked, and displayed on London Bridge. It is also true that the decapitated heads of his two brothers were later added to the gruesome display. However, the claim that the skulls have been found is completely false. This aspect is a work of fiction created by World News Daily Report.
A photo included with the story is not of the Wallace skull, but of a medieval skull discovered at Stirling Castle in Scotland from 2011.
The skull of William Wallace was not discovered by English construction workers. The piece of writing that claims this originated from a website which specializes in satirical and fictional fake news stories. A picture attached to the false story is actually from a 2011 excavation in Scotland and does not depict the skull of William Wallace.
