The spurious tragedy comes to the public courtesy of Duffel Blog. On their ‘About’ page, which can be found under the ‘More’ link at the top of the site, Duffel Blog describes themselves as “The military version of The Onion”.  Furthermore, a disclaimer also found under the ‘More’ link contains the following information:

“We are in no way, shape, or form, a real news outlet. Everything on this website is satirical and the content of this site is a parody of a news organization. No composition should be regarded as truthful, and no reference of an individual, company, or military unit seeks to inflict malice or emotional harm. All characters, groups, and military units appearing in these works are fictitious. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, or actual military units and companies is purely coincidental.”

Satirical news sites have become lucrative in the past year and a half, many bringing forth stories which go viral when social media users fail to realize that the news isn’t real. One need only look as far as the advertising section on the Duffel Blog website to confirm this. There we find that the site, “…receives 1-2 million unique visitors and 4-9 million page views each month… We receive fairly steady traffic, but many of our stories are highly shareable that go viral on social networks.”

Their latest contribution is a story about Chinese fighter jets sinking a Naval aircraft carrier. The article reports that 5,247 sailor had died while 143 were still missing. Aside from the author’s name being “Maxx Butthurt”, and the dryly humorous & apathetic responses from American authorities, there is nothing really amusing within the story that identifies it as satire (hence, the bad satire), yet it is a completely fake piece of writing.

Chinese jets have not sunk a Navy aircraft carrier. This article is from a website that writes military satire, and the feature is a fictional story that should not be taken seriously.
